Wake County Judge Rules That The Quran Can Be Used in Courtroom

The News & Record reports here that a Wake County judge ruled today that the Quran can be used to swear in witnesses in North Carolina courtrooms.

The ruling applies to other religious texts as well.

The ACLU is a plaintiff, as is Syidah Mateen, a Muslim woman who said she was denied the use of the Quran in a Guilford County court.

Nussbaum Center Hosts Statewide Rollout of NC LEAP on Monday, June 4

Greensboro's Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship will host the Statewide Rollout of the North Carolina Lawyers Entrepreneurs Assistance Program (NC LEAP) on Monday, June 4, 2007 at 10:30 a.m.

NC LEAP is a program designed to enlist and enable business lawyers across North Carolina to provide legal advice and assistance to low-wealth entrepreneurs through pro bono projects.

Bokhoven Family Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Tolly Carr

I apologize if this is already old news...

Last week, Casey Bokhoven's family filed a lawsuit against Tolly Carr, the WXII morning anchor charged in the accident in which Bokhoven was killed.

The wrongful death lawsuit was also brought against the three bars that allegedly served Carr the night of the accident.

News Channel 14 carries this story, explaining that businesses that serve alcoholic beverages are reviewing their training procedures in light of the recent lawsuit.

The News & Record reports here that local U.S. Attorney Anna Mills Wagoner is among those that U.S. Justice Department officials considered firing next year for apparently political reasons.

Blake Morant Named New Dean of Wake Forest University School of Law

Womble Carlyle Launches Pro Bono Program for Veterans

Womble Carlyle has announced the commencement of a statewide pro bono project in collaboration with the Young Lawyers Division of the North Carolina Bar Association. The project will provide military veterans with pro bono legal assistance in the initial stages of disability claims filed with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The first training session for attorneys will take place in Womble Carlyle’s Raleigh office on Tuesday, May 22nd, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The firm will then conduct a day-long clinic for veterans in its Raleigh office on Wednesday, May 23rd, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nexsen Pruet attorneys in Greensboro create new firm

The Business Journal reports here that seven Greensboro attorneys with Nexsen Pruet Adams Kleemeier resigned Tuesday to create a firm focused on business law.

The firm name will be Hagan Davis Mangum Barrett Langley & Hale.

Place your hand on the bible?

A Wake County Superior court is hearing arguments today in a lawsuit challenging a state policy that allows only the Bible to be used in such court procedures. The lawsuit alleges that state law is unconstitutional because it favors Christianity over other religions.

The Business Journal reports here that the law firm Nexsen Pruet Adam Kleemeier has created a team to help startups and emerging businesses.

The Innovation Team will include the practice areas of corporate intellectual property, labor and employment, and economic development.
